Cuc Phuong National Park

Ninh Binh, Viet Nam
Step into the heart of Vietnam’s oldest national park — Cuc Phuong, where ancient trees, hidden caves, and rich biodiversity await.

Cuc Phuong National Park, established in 1962, is Vietnam’s first and largest national park. Located at the border of Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Hoa Binh provinces, it covers over 22,000 hectares of lush tropical rainforest. Known for its incredible biodiversity, ancient limestone mountains, and unique cultural heritage, Cuc Phuong is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Where is Cuc Phuong National Park?

  • Location: Nho Quan District, Ninh Binh Province, about 120 km southwest of Hanoi
  • Opening hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily
  • Entrance fee: 60,000 VND per adult

The park is easily accessible by car or motorbike from Hanoi (around 2.5 hours) and is a must-visit stop on a Ninh Binh nature tour.

What to see and do in Cuc Phuong

Cuc Phuong is home to hundreds of rare animal and plant species, prehistoric caves, and scenic trails. Here are the highlights you shouldn’t miss:

  • Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC): Dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating rare primates such as the Delacour’s langur, black-shanked douc, and gibbons. It’s one of the most important conservation centers in Southeast Asia.
  • Turtle Conservation Center: Learn about efforts to protect Vietnam’s endangered freshwater turtles and tortoises.
  • Ancient Tree Trail: A scenic trek through dense forest leading to giant thousand-year-old trees with roots wrapping around limestone rocks.
  • Prehistoric Caves: Explore “Nguoi Xua” (Ancient Man Cave) where archaeological discoveries revealed evidence of human habitation thousands of years ago.
  • Butterfly Season (April–May): During late spring, millions of colorful butterflies fill the forest, creating a magical scene like no other.

Trekking & Eco-adventures

The park offers various trekking routes ranging from easy to challenging. Visitors can join guided hikes through the forest, cycle along the park’s trails, or even stay overnight in the Muong ethnic villages inside the park for a deeper cultural experience.

  • Short trek: Around 2–3 km, suitable for beginners.
  • Medium trek: 7–10 km to the ancient tree or caves.
  • Long trek: 15–20 km, often combined with a homestay in Muong village.

Wildlife and biodiversity

Cuc Phuong is home to over 300 bird species, 130 animal species, and 2,000 plant species. Many are rare or endemic, including the clouded leopard, Asian black bear, and the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey. Birdwatchers will especially enjoy the early morning chorus of exotic species echoing through the forest canopy.

Best time to visit

The ideal time to visit Cuc Phuong is from February to May or September to November, when the weather is dry and pleasant. Avoid the rainy season (July–August) when trails can be slippery. The butterfly season in late April to May is particularly magical.

How to get there

From Hanoi, you can reach Cuc Phuong by car, bus, or motorbike. Buses to Nho Quan or Ninh Binh City depart regularly, from where you can take a taxi or rent a motorbike to the park entrance. Many travelers also combine their visit with Trang An, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, or Tam Coc.

Travel tips

  • Wear hiking shoes and light long-sleeved clothes to protect against insects.
  • Bring insect repellent, water, and snacks — there are limited facilities inside the park.
  • If you plan to stay overnight, book accommodation in advance (park guesthouse or local homestay).
  • Respect nature — avoid littering and don’t feed wild animals.

Cuc Phuong National Park is not only a sanctuary for wildlife but also a living museum of Vietnam’s natural and cultural heritage. Whether you come for trekking, birdwatching, or simply to breathe the fresh forest air, Cuc Phuong offers an unforgettable connection with nature.
