Among the countless limestone formations of Halong Bay, Dau Go Cave stands out as one of the largest and most beautiful. Often called the “Cave of Marvels,” this natural masterpiece is famous for its impressive stalactites, colorful rock chambers, and the legendary story behind its name. A visit here offers not just breathtaking scenery, but also a journey through Vietnam’s cultural and geological past.
Dau Go Cave is situated on the same island as Thien Cung Cave, making it a perfect stop for travelers exploring the western area of Halong Bay. The entrance to the cave is about 27 meters above sea level, reached by climbing around 90 stone steps carved into the mountainside. Once inside, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a mesmerizing world of stone pillars and glittering formations.
The name “Dau Go” literally means “Wooden Stakes.” According to local legend, during the 13th century, General Tran Hung Dao hid wooden stakes inside this cave before deploying them in the famous Bach Dang naval battle — the one that defeated the Mongol invaders. The story gives the cave both historical depth and patriotic symbolism.
Dau Go Cave is vast — about 12 meters high, 25 meters wide, and stretches over 500 meters deep. It consists of three main chambers:
Colorful lights highlight the natural sculptures, creating a magical atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. Many visitors describe it as walking through a natural art gallery crafted by water, time, and imagination.
Dau Go Cave is accessible only by boat. Most Halong Bay day cruises and overnight cruise tours that depart from Tuan Chau or Bai Chay include this attraction, often paired with Thien Cung Cave. The climb up to the cave’s entrance can be steep but rewarding — wear comfortable shoes and bring water for the short hike.
The best months to explore Dau Go Cave are from October to April, when the weather is dry, cool, and the sea is calm. During summer (May–September), the cave offers a refreshing retreat from the tropical heat.
Whether you come for its beauty, history, or mystery, Dau Go Cave remains one of Halong Bay’s most unforgettable destinations — a timeless reminder of Vietnam’s natural splendor and heroic past.
