Located in the center of Ba Dinh Square, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a must-visit attraction for anyone exploring Hanoi. This monumental marble structure preserves the embalmed body of President Ho Chi Minh, the founding father of modern Vietnam. Visitors can witness the deep respect and admiration the Vietnamese people have for their leader while admiring the architectural blend of traditional and modern elements that define this remarkable site.
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum stands at the heart of Ba Dinh Square, where President Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam’s independence in 1945. Built between 1973 and 1975, the mausoleum is inspired by Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow, yet it retains distinctive Vietnamese characteristics, such as the grey granite exterior and red-and-black polished stone interior. The site is surrounded by lush gardens, bamboo groves, and pathways that enhance the peaceful atmosphere of this sacred space.
The mausoleum is easily accessible from central Hanoi. You can take a taxi, Grab car, or motorbike taxi (Xe Om) to Ba Dinh Square. Public buses such as No. 09, 22, and 45 stop nearby. If you’re staying in the Old Quarter, a short 10-minute ride will get you there.
*Tip: The mausoleum opens early in the morning and often has long queues. Arrive before 7:00 AM to avoid crowds, and remember that photography inside the building is strictly prohibited.
Construction of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum began in 1973 and was completed in 1975. It was built to honor President Ho Chi Minh, who dedicated his life to Vietnam’s independence and unification. Although he wished to be cremated, the government decided to preserve his body so that people could pay their respects for generations to come.
The mausoleum is 21.6 meters high and 41.2 meters wide, surrounded by 79 cycad trees representing the 79 years of Ho Chi Minh’s life. Inside, his preserved body lies in a glass case, guarded by soldiers in white uniforms. Every year, the site closes for several months (usually September–November) for maintenance and preservation work.
