Hospital Cave is one of Cat Ba Island's most unique historical landmarks. Hidden deep inside a massive limestone cliff, this secret underground facility served as a bomb-proof hospital and military shelter during the Vietnam War, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the country's resilient past.
Hidden within Cat Ba National Park, Hospital Cave combines impressive natural limestone formations with a carefully designed underground medical facility spread across several levels.
The cave is located about 10 km from Cat Ba Town and can be reached by taxi, motorbike, bicycle, or as part of guided island tours.
The cave contains operating rooms, patient wards, meeting rooms, living quarters, and emergency exits, all ingeniously constructed within the mountain to withstand air raids. Visitors can explore much of the original structure while learning about its wartime significance.
Built between 1963 and 1965, Hospital Cave served as a secret military hospital during the Vietnam War. It accommodated doctors, nurses, soldiers, and local residents while providing protection from bombing campaigns. Today, it remains one of Cat Ba Island's most important historical sites.
