Standing proudly in the middle of Halong Bay’s emerald waters, the Kissing Rocks — also known as Hon Trong Mai or the Fighting Cock Islet — are two limestone formations that resemble a pair of roosters facing each other, locked in an eternal kiss. These rocks have become one of Vietnam’s most recognizable natural icons and a symbol of love, balance, and fidelity, deeply cherished by locals and travelers alike.
The Kissing Rocks are located in the heart of Halong Bay — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and are usually one of the first attractions you’ll see on your cruise journey. Towering about 12 meters above sea level, the rocks stand opposite each other on small limestone bases, creating a perfect balance that seems to defy gravity. At sunrise or sunset, their golden reflection on the calm water creates a romantic, dreamlike scene.
You can only admire the Kissing Rocks by boat as part of your Halong Bay cruise. Almost all day and overnight cruises include this stop on their itinerary, usually during the first sailing stage from Tuan Chau or Bai Chay Harbor.
*Tip: The best time to photograph the Kissing Rocks is early morning or late afternoon when the sunlight hits them from the side, enhancing their shape and shadow on the water.*
According to local legend, the two rocks represent a pair of lovers who waited faithfully for each other until they turned into stone. Another version tells that they symbolize a rooster and a hen facing each other — a symbol of eternal love and unity. Their Vietnamese name, “Hòn Trống Mái,” literally means “Male and Female Rocks.”
Beyond its romantic symbolism, the Kissing Rocks also reflect the delicate balance of nature and harmony that defines the spirit of Halong Bay.
The ideal time to visit is between **October and April**, when Halong Bay enjoys mild weather and calm seas, making boat trips smooth and photography conditions perfect. Early morning light or golden sunset hours provide the best views and colors for photos.
Whether you’re on a short day cruise or an overnight trip, witnessing the Kissing Rocks up close is a highlight of any Halong Bay adventure — a timeless symbol that embodies the beauty and romance of Vietnam’s most famous natural wonder.
